How Shell Bell works

Every direct hit stores 4% of the damage it dealt, and the store pays out as healing at no more than 4 HP per second. The store itself holds at most 4 HP.

You reach the cap at about 100 damage per second, so fast moves that hit many enemies fill it quickest. Burn and poison ticks do not feed it.

The table turns damage dealt per second into healing per second.

Shell Bell compared with cards and upgrades

The 4 HP per second cap equals Leftovers on a Pokemon with about 267 max HP, or 4.4 Synthesis cards.

Cards come from level-ups during a run and upgrades are bought with coins between runs, while a held item takes the single item slot. The table puts them side by side. The upgrades guide covers the whole shop.

Trade-off and when to take Shell Bell

The cap means it never turns a weak build into a tank, and a single huge hit gives you no more than 4 HP.

The bell suits builds that hit many enemies at once. Every enemy that a blast, beam or orbit hits adds to the same store, so a crowd is what keeps it full.

It is a poor fit for slow single-target builds, because the healing follows your damage per second and nothing else.

How to find Shell Bell

Held items come from three places. Every boss drops one, and a full run has five bosses, at minutes 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15. A locked chest holds one half the time, and an ordinary chest 8% of the time. Rift legendaries drop one as well. The bosses guide lists every boss and the rifts guide covers the legendaries.

Each drop picks one of the 11 items at random with no memory of what you carry, so a given drop is Shell Bell one time in 11 (9.1%). Over the 5 boss drops of a full run that is a 38% chance of meeting Shell Bell at least once, before counting chests.

You carry one item at a time. If you find a second, the game pauses and asks which to keep, and in a group it pauses for everyone. Finding the item you already carry changes nothing: you are told you already carry it and play on. The full list is on the held items page.
