What Hydro Pump does
Hydro Pump is a Water-type beam move. A slow but devastating water blast.
A Pokemon can learn it if it is Water-type, which is true of 149 of the 966 Pokemon. It reaches you as a new-move card when you level up, as long as one of your four move slots is free. No Pokemon begins a run with it, so you only find it on level-up cards. Each level-up draws three cards by weight from up to six new-move candidates, your move upgrades and the stat cards, so even a good move can sit out several level-ups.
Hydro Pump stats by level
At level 1, Hydro Pump deals 29 damage with a 1.5 second cooldown. At level 5 that becomes 63 damage every 1.13 seconds, which is 56.1 potential damage per second against 19.3 at level 1.
Potential damage per second multiplies damage by the number of hits and divides by the cooldown. It assumes every one lands on the same enemy and leaves out the Pokemon's attack multiplier, your cards and the type chart, so treat it as an upper bound for comparing levels and moves, not as a kill time.
| Level | Damage | Cooldown | Length | Width | Potential damage per second |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 29 | 1.5 s | 250 | 30 | 19.3 |
| 2 | 42 | 1.5 s | 250 | 30 | 28 |
| 3 | 42 | 1.5 s | 325 | 39 | 28 |
| 4 | 42 | 1.13 s | 325 | 39 | 37.4 |
| 5 | 63 | 1.13 s | 325 | 39 | 56.1 |
| Hydro Cannon | 114 | 0.96 s | 390 | 59 | 118.7 |

How to use Hydro Pump
- Beam moves aim at a boss within 330 pixels first, then at an enemy touching you, then at the nearest enemy, so this is the kind of move that reaches a boss through a crowd. It waits until a target is in reach before it fires.
- Fire, Ground, and Rock take 60% more damage from Water moves, while Water, Grass, and Dragon take 40% less. Enemies with two types multiply both effects. See the type chart.
- Other beam moves are Psybeam, Ice Beam, and Dragon Rage. The moves list compares all 64.
- Each Reflexes card multiplies every cooldown by 0.92 and each Power card multiplies damage by 1.10. After 5 Reflexes cards the 1.5 second cooldown of Hydro Pump at level 1 becomes 0.99 seconds.
- Only the move group in your active slot fires, and every move in the group keeps its own cooldown timer. A bond, which a rift win gives you, fuses loose moves into one group.
- Weather can boost or weaken Water moves: see the weather guide.
