What the Eternal Glacier is
A rift is a short fight against a legendary Pokemon. When the game opens one, it picks a legendary and then one of that legendary's types, and the arena of that type is where the fight happens. Eternal Glacier is the arena for Ice. It is a circle about 11 tiles in radius, the fight lasts at most 120 seconds, and the legendary does not suffer the hazards of its own arena.
Plates of ice that make you slide. Columns are rare, so there is little to hide behind.
Eternal Glacier terrain: ice
On the ice you slide instead of stopping at once: your target speed is 15% higher than on normal ground, but your speed changes slowly, so your path is harder to correct. Ice-type Pokemon ignore the effect, which is 46 Pokemon on the roster, or 5%. About 36% of the arena floor is ice.
Sliding does no damage by itself. The risk is overshooting a safe spot when a ground warning appears, so start moving earlier than you would on normal ground.
Weather in the Eternal Glacier: Snow
Snow is forced for the whole fight. Ice moves hit 50% harder. Every Pokemon that is not Ice loses HP over time and moves about 10% slower.
The multipliers apply to the legendary's attacks as well. An enemy attacks as its first type, so 3 legendaries here hit harder in this weather (Articuno, Regice, and Glastrier).
Moves worth carrying here: Ice Beam, Powder Snow, and Hail. The weather guide lists every multiplier.
| Type | Effect on moves of that type |
|---|---|
| Ice | x1.5 damage |
Legendaries that can open the Eternal Glacier
4 legendaries have the Ice type, and all of them shoot from a distance. Their speed runs from 56 to 72. A legendary with two types opens this arena only half the time, and a legendary you have not beaten yet is picked 4 times as often as one you have.
| Legendary | Types | Style | Speed | Opens this arena |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Articuno | Ice / Flying | Shooter | 70 | Half the time |
| Regice | Ice | Shooter | 61 | Always |
| Kyurem | Dragon / Ice | Shooter | 72 | Half the time |
| Glastrier | Ice | Shooter | 56 | Always |
How to fight in the Eternal Glacier
- Ice types ignore the sliding. The best by Stat Score are Baxcalibur, Kyurem, Cetitan, Mamoswine, and Iron Bundle.
- Move in small, early steps and keep your back to open ground, because stopping takes longer than on normal terrain.
- Every legendary here is a shooter. Columns and distance matter more than raw speed.
- Plan for the clock. At minute 10 the legendary has about 8,600 HP, so you need roughly 72 damage per second for 120 seconds. Its contact hit takes 66 HP and its shots 33 HP at that point, before armor and type effects. The rifts guide has the full table.
- Speed: the legendaries here move at 56 to 72, and the median Pokemon moves at 105, faster than all of them.
What you get for winning
A win gives the same prize in every arena: the legendary joins you as a bond, plus a held item, experience, three tickets and a share of coins, and a ten-ticket one time in two. The legendaries guide lists all 87, and beating one counts toward the legendary achievements in the achievements guide.
