What the Sea Grotto is

A rift is a short fight against a legendary Pokemon. When the game opens one, it picks a legendary and then one of that legendary's types, and the arena of that type is where the fight happens. Sea Grotto is the arena for Water. It is a circle about 11 tiles in radius, the fight lasts at most 120 seconds, and the legendary does not suffer the hazards of its own arena.

Puddles that slow down whoever walks through them. Columns are rare, so there is little to hide behind.

Sea Grotto terrain: puddles

Standing in the puddles does no damage, but it multiplies your movement speed by 0.6. Water-type Pokemon ignore it, which is 149 Pokemon on the roster, or 15%. About 33% of the arena floor is covered.

Speed is what keeps you out of the legendary's ground warnings, so a slow patch in the wrong place is how most runs are lost here. Your speed is the base speed stat of your Pokemon, so the table shows what you lose: 80 drops to 48, the median 105 drops to 63, and 162 drops to 97.

Weather in the Sea Grotto: Rain

Rain is forced for the whole fight. Water moves hit 50% harder, Electric moves 20% harder, and Fire moves lose half their damage.

The multipliers apply to the legendary's attacks as well. An enemy attacks as its first type, so 7 legendaries here hit harder in this weather (Suicune, Kyogre, Palkia, Phione, Manaphy and more), and Volcanion hits weaker.

Moves worth carrying here: Water Gun, Bubble, Hydro Pump, Aqua Ring, Bubble Beam, Thunder Shock, Discharge, and Thunderbolt. The weather guide lists every multiplier.
