What the Igneous Volcano is

A rift is a short fight against a legendary Pokemon. When the game opens one, it picks a legendary and then one of that legendary's types, and the arena of that type is where the fight happens. Igneous Volcano is the arena for Fire. It is a circle about 11 tiles in radius, the fight lasts at most 120 seconds, and the legendary does not suffer the hazards of its own arena.

Rivers of lava that burn anything standing in them. Columns are rare, so there is little to hide behind.

Igneous Volcano terrain: lava

Standing in the lava hurts every 0.5 seconds. Each tick takes the larger of 5 HP and 3% of your max HP, and it ignores the short invulnerability that follows a normal hit. Armor and damage reduction still apply. The flat part decides the damage up to about 167 max HP, which covers most Pokemon at the start of a run.

Fire-type Pokemon ignore it completely. That is 76 Pokemon on the roster, or 8% of it. Everyone else should keep moving, because the lava covers about 31% of the arena.

Weather in the Igneous Volcano: Sun

Sun is forced for the whole fight. Fire moves hit 50% harder and Water moves lose half their damage.

The multipliers apply to the legendary's attacks as well. An enemy attacks as its first type, so 5 legendaries here hit harder in this weather (Moltres, Entei, Ho-Oh, Heatran, and Volcanion).

Moves worth carrying here: Ember, Flamethrower, Fire Spin, Heat Wave, Will-O-Wisp, and Flame Wheel. The weather guide lists every multiplier.
